ARCHIVED - Benidorm tourism sector rejuvenated by British holidaymakers
Hotel occupancy in the Costa Blanca town exceeded 80 per cent during the month of August
The reactivation of foreign travel, together with a largely successful global vaccination campaign, has breathed new life into the flailing Benidorm tourism sector, with the upsurge in British holidaymakers at the end of August giving the Costa Blanca hotel industry a much needed boost. The improvement has been welcomed by the Hotel and Tourism Business Association of the Valencian Community (HOSBEC), who claims that if the current trend continues, September too could shape up to be a pretty good month for the industry.
During the last week of August, all expectations were exceed as hotel occupancy in Benidorm reached 70.1%, compared to the 63.8% that had been projected. However, it’s not all good news as this figure was actually 12% lower than the previous week (August 23 to 29), when occupancy stood at 82.1%.
Overall, the month of August saw an average occupancy of 83.6%, a very positive result according to HOSBEC, given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. It was nowhere near the 2019 figures, however, when 93.3% of rooms were occupied.
National tourism still accounted for the vast majority of bookings in Benidorm last month, at 75.3%, and although there weren’t as many international visitors to Spain as in normal years, British travellers accounted for 11.2% of all hotel stays, the highest figure of any foreign holidaymakers. It must be noted, however, that pre-pandemic tourists from the UK made up 40% of all trade.
Following the British, visitors from Portugal accounted for 4.7% of hotel occupancy in the last week of August followed by Belgium at 2.2%, the Netherlands at 1.5% and France at 1.2%.
