ARCHIVED - Benidorm greenlights first skyscraper in Spain powered only by wind and solar panels
The experimental self-sufficient residential block will be built in Benidorm's Via Parque
Spain's first "innovative self-sufficient" skyscraper looks set to be built in Benidorm, a building that will be powered by wind and solar panels and join the resort's growing fleet of high-rise blocks.
Alicante developer TM Grupo Inmobiliario is behind the pioneering project in collaboration with the University of Alicante, and plans to construct a 30-storey block of 100 flats on a plot in Avenida Guatamala, within the 2/1 West sector.
In the next scheduled plenary session, Benidorm council will approve the Interior Reform Plan (PRI) which will make viable the construction of "an innovative wind-powered building" which will also incorporate other renewable energies in Poniente's Via Parque – "the largest plot of land available in Spain".
Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez stressed, "With this experimental tower using renewable energy, Benidorm reaches a new milestone and consolidates its position as a reference and spearhead in terms of environmental sustainability."
Importantly, the PRI establishes compensation that TM will have to pay the Town Hall for the increase in the "buildable tertiary ceiling in the tower".
As on other occasions, this compensation will be made in the form of land and money. On the one hand, the Town Hall will obtain 1,050 square metres for use as pavements around the plot, as well as the Racó de l'Infern quarry which the developer will regenerate and then hand over to Benidorm for public use.
Also, the company will pay the council 1.5 million euros which will be allocated to municipal land assets.
"With the acquisition of the quarry regenerated, Benidorm wins in terms of green spaces and thus meets an environmental objective while advancing research into sustainable energy models," said the mayor.
The skyscraper will form part of an R+D+I project between TM Grupo and the University of Alicante which strives to provide "greater and better knowledge of wind energy at height".
The project has already made slight headway with the installation of two anemometers. The first is located at ground level and has been taking measurements for 18 months. The second, at a height of 100 metres, allows real-time comparison of the increase in wind speed and energy available at the top of the building.
To further amplify the wind speed and convert it into energy, the tower will have an aerodynamic design and two types of turbine to provide sufficient energy to power the apartment block.
And to complement this wind energy, the building will have a horizontal photovoltaic plant on the roof and vertical solar panels on one of its façades.
"With the turbines, panels and storage systems planned, the urban fabric of Benidorm will be home to a building that will not only have almost zero energy consumption, but will even have a positive energy balance.
"We are talking about an important investment, about innovation in building and about Benidorm's capacity to attract projects of this magnitude that reduce the human footprint on the territory," added Benidorm mayor.
