ARCHIVED - Torrevieja finalises plans for largest new housing development in Alicante
The Costa Blanca project will construct 7,490 homes at a cost of 53 million euros
Work is set to begin as soon as April on one of the Alicante’s most ambitious developments. Set on a massive 1.8 million square metre plot, the La Hoya Sector-20 urbanisation will have the capacity to house 18,000 new residents in its 7,490 homes – the equivalent of the current population of Rojales.
Torrevieja City Council has this week approved the final step for the project, and while people can now raise any objections they may have, work is expected to begin within the next two months.
Bordered by the CV-905, the La Siesta Urbanisation, the La Mata lagoon and natural park, the Quirón Hospital, the International Auditorium, the site s the last piece of major developable land in Torrevieja.
The developers now need only request a licence from the Torrevieja City Council to begin working on La Hoya, which will start with installing roads and basic services such as lighting and sanitation, footpaths and green areas. Another major element of the project will be the installation of an artificial pond close to the CV-905 capable of storing 40,000 cubic metres of rainwater to prevent flooding.
In addition, a pedestrian footbridge and walkway will need to be constructed over the N-332 as well as a flyover beside the hospital, and 450,000 euros has been earmarked for a forest restoration project next to the natural park. In all, 53 million euros will be spent on the La Hoya urbanisation.
And of course, no housing project is complete without its own commercial centre: in this case, 103,000 square metres of bars, restaurants and shops that will be located between the current Jardín del Mar-Doña Inés urbanisation and La Siesta.
The major undertaking is not without its detractors, however, with the main bone of contention the road that will link the CV-905 and the N-332, which is right beside the protected natural park.
