ARCHIVED - Beach volunteers wanted: Alfaz del Pi in Alicante joins World Cleanup Day 2021
The town in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, is taking part in the global effort to clean up the planet on September 18
World Cleanup Day is marked annually in 180 countries bringing more than 18 million volunteers together to clear litter and mismanaged waste and once again L'Alfaz del Pi is getting involved.
A major clean up of the Serra Gelada Natural Park coves will take place at 11am on Saturday September 18, organised by the Residents and Environmental departments of the local council.
Armed with gloves and bags, teams of volunteers will clear and tidy up the coves of Amerador el Metge and La Mina, which have apparently attracted larger crowds this year as people have been forced to spend weekends and holidays closer to home due to the pandemic.
"This is not the first time a clear up of this kind has been carried out in this natural area to eliminate the waste left behind by an influx of absent-minded users, or due to the effect of the sea that sometimes returns to us what we discard or throw away from land or boats," said the council.
Cleanup Day began in the small northern European country of Estonia (which has a population of around 1.3 million) when, in 2008, 50,000 people united to clean up the entire country – in just five hours!
A global civic movement was born and spread like wildfire with people worldwide inspired to follow suit with the same ambitious ‘one country, one-day’ formula.
