Baby Jesus stolen from Alicante Nativity and held to ransom
The thieves have demanded 2,000 euros for the safe return of the Sant Vicent del Respeig Christmas figurine
The Alicante town of Sant Vicent del Raspeig is experiencing its own nightmare before Christmas following the theft of Baby Jesus from the municipal Nativity scene. The lowly thieves have posted a video on social media demanding 2,000 euros for the safe return of the statue.
The young robbers set up an account on TikTok called ‘Kidnappers of San Vicente’ and posed in full black balaclavas and hooded jackets beside the Baby Jesus. The thieves have also used a computer program to alter their voices, making them all the more difficult to identify.
They have covered the life-sized figurine in 10 and 20 euro notes and have made it clear that they will not return the statue unless the ransom is paid. What’s more, the kidnappers have threatened to damage the Baby Jesus if the police don’t pay up soon.
The brazen men also filmed the entire robbery and posted the footage on their page. In the video, a young man can be seen hopping out of a car, walking up to the Nativity and snatching the figure. When another passenger shouts, “My goodness, a car is coming,” he throws the Baby Jesus inside and speeds off.
Police are understood to be following several leads and have have promised a “prompt resolution.”
Incredibly, this isn’t the only Nativity theft in Alicante. A few days ago, Jesus was stolen from his crib in the Plaza de Banimaclet for the second year running, and this time around the robbers also hacked off the mule’s ears.
A little farther south in Cádiz, a group of young British tourists were caught on camera recently scrambling all over the giant Nativity scene in the city of Jerez de la Frontera. Hours later, residents woke up to find the Baby Jesus statue smashed in the middle of the street, but it’s unclear whether the holidaymakers were responsible for this act of vandalism.
