August 14 and 15 Annual fiestas in Cabo de Palos

A sardine barbecue, two live concerts and walking the greasy pole in the port of Cabo de Palos

15^th August, which falls on a Saturday this year, is a national holiday in Spain due to it being the feast day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a date which was apparently decided on by Pope Pius XII as recently as 1950.

But the Virgen de la Asunción is also the honorary patron of numerous places throughout the country, among them Cabo de Palos, and for that reason there are fiestas every year to celebrate the date. This year the Cabo Pop festival takes place alongside the lighthouse on 14^th and 15^th August, and at the same time there are another of other events scheduled:

Friday August 14

20.30: Sardine barbecue.

22.30: Live music from El Sitio de Mi Garaje at the Muro de La Sal.

Saturday August 15

12.00: The “cucaña” event, competitors attempt to walk along a greasy pole over the sea, while DJs provide musical entertainment.

22.30: Flamenco concert at the Muro de La Sal.

On both days there will be fun and games for children (bouncy castles and the like) at the neighbours’ association on the road of to the lighthouse.
