ARCHIVED - Arrest in Torrevieja after man stabbed in neck and left for dead in car
Suspect charged with attempted murder after row over money turned violent in the Vega Baja, Alicante province.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Torrevieja and charged with attempted murder after another man was stabbed in the neck and "left to die" in a car before being rescued by a passer-by.
It's believed the victim and the detainee - who has been remanded into custody - got into an argument over money, which quickly became violent, resulting in the injured man sustaining a stab wound to the neck - "centimetres away" from being potentially fatal.
His alleged attacker then ran off, leaving the victim "to his own fate" in a car on July 16.
Fortunately, a passerby heard a cry for help coming from inside a parked vehicle, and on seeing the bloodied man inside, immediately called emergency services.
Police and an ambulance were sent to the scene and the victim was taken to the University Hospital of Torrevieja with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Meanwhile officers searched the car and surroundings and found part of a blade believed to have been the weapon used by the attacker, but there was little more to go on until detectives discovered a man had reported being the victim of an assault at a nearby police station, claiming to have suffered a cut finger.
Investigators located the complainant and he was arrested for attempted murder by causing serious injury and fleeing the scene "leaving the victim abandoned to his fate" in an isolated area.
The actions of the passerby were deemed "decisive" in saving the man's life following "a brawl which may have originated as a result of a disagreement of a financial nature", according to Torrevieja's Judicial Police Team of the Guardia Civil.
The 36-year-old appeared before the courts in Torrevieja this week, and was remanded into custody, awaiting trial.
