ARCHIVED - Arrest in Alicante after policeman is brutally beaten on a bus
A 29-year-old has been detained on the Costa Blanca following a terrifying attack on an off-duty officer in Zaragoza
A violent suspect has been arrested in Alicante after an off-duty policeman was brutally beaten on a bus in Zaragoza for asking his attacker to wear a facemask.
According to the National Police, the 29-year-old man was arrested at around 2.40pm on Monday October 25 at a property in Calle Guardiola following a manhunt "lasting several days".
Officers from the Zaragoza Judicial Police Brigade believe the alleged attacker "clearly intended to leave the country" and followed his trail for eight days, collaborating with Alicante Judicial Police Brigade and the Madrid Special Systems Unit.
The horrific assault happened at around 4am on October 17.
WARNING: Viewer discretion is advised
The off-duty policeman and his attacker, along with other passengers, were travelling on an inner city bus when the victim identified himself as an officer and asked the suspect to put on his mask, which are mandatory whilst travelling on public transport.
However, the passenger reacted violently and, after kicking him in the chest, punched the officer in the face and head in front of terrified witnesses.
The victim spent several hours under observation in hospital, where he was treated for choroidal effusion (abnormal accumulation of fluid in the eye), and cuts and bruising.
Thanks to a video recorded during the assault, the National Police were able to identify the suspect and a search and arrest warrant was issued, which culminated in his arrest on Monday.
The alleged attacker is currently in custody awaiting trial this week.
