ARCHIVED - VIDEO: Bottlenose dolphins put on a spectacular show off Torrevieja coast
A pod of bottlenose dolphins was spotted close to the shore off El Cura beach in the Vega Baja coastal town, Alicante province
Spectacular footage of a pod of bottlenose dolphins surrounding and tailing a pleasure boat off the coast of Torrevieja has been shared on social media.
The social mammals were spotted putting on an impressive performance, jumping in the air close to the shore in front of El Cura beach, much to the delight of boat passengers and thrilled bathers on Monday July 11.
The clip captured from land shows the skipper of the pleasure boat carefully maintaining the vessel's course from the north of Torrevieja coastline to the south without crossing the trail of jumping dolphins.
Alicante coastline has a stable population of these cetaceans and sightings have become more common in recent years as the dolphins have learned to feed on the fishing activity of the trawling and small-scale fishing fleets and around marine farms.
The Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE), which has carried out several studies and monitoring of groups of bottlenose dolphins, has identified more than 500 species between the Alicante and Malaga coasts.
A major catastrophe was narrowly avoided in Torevieja port on Monday July 11 when there was an explosion on a boat moored in the port. It's not clear what caused the explosion but an adult and two girls aged 12 and 15 years old were treated for minor burns at Torrevieja Hospital and thankfully the fire was quickly contained.
