ARCHIVED - Shooting of Alicante cyclist by rabbit hunter deemed accidental
The cyclist suffered more than 100 pellet wounds when the Costa Blanca hunter mistook him for a rabbit

The Judicial Police of North Alicante has determined that the incident of a cyclist being shot by a hunter on Mount Orgegia last month was an “accidental event” as the shooter mistook him for a rabbit. Nevertheless, the hunter will face charges for recklessness and causing serious injury.
Officials concluded that the unfortunate incident had occurred due to the distance and unevenness of the terrain as well as the speed with which the whole event occurred.
On November 18, the cyclist was exercising in the Alicante park when he was shot by the hunter, who had been enjoying a day out with his family. The victim suffered more than 100 pellet wounds to his back, arms and hands and the hunter, who had all the correct permits, claimed that the sudden movements of his victim led him to believe he was aiming at a rabbit in the distance.
Since the accident, the Compromís political party has called for a ban on hunting in the area, which its supporters indicate has become a popular recreational spot.
