ARCHIVED - Paseo Cabo Roig in Orihuela awarded Blue Trail distinction
The 2km trail joins beaches along the Orihuela coastline in the Vega Baja comarca, Alicante province.
The Paseo Cabo Roig in Orihuela has been recognised with the Blue Trail award (Sendero Azul) for its environmental and educational value.
The 2km coastline path connects the coastline's beach from La Caleta to Cala Capitan, and has been awarded the distinction by a panel of judges formed by members of the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The distinction recognises pathways that link, cross or access beaches, ports and harbours, and the purpose of the Blue Trail awards is to promote the connection of Blue Flag sites through trails that "enhance the value of natural areas with cultural and heritage interest".
Paseo Cabo Roig is considered "of great interest" because of the geological materials that make up the cliffs and beaches around it, as well as the area's archaeological heritage, such as the Torre de Cabo Roig - a military watchtower built in the 16th century which is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest.
The award also recognises efforts made to transform coastal paths into "valuable resources for recreational, sports, tourism and environmental education activities".
Last month, Orihuela's beaches on the Costa Blanca were awarded 11 Blue Flags, making it the second municipality in Spain with the most awards.
