ARCHIVED - Alicante province remains national leader with the most coveted Blue Flags in Spain
The province of Alicante continues to lead the way in Spain with the most Blue Flags on its beaches.
Blue Flags are one of the world’s most recognised voluntary awards for beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators, and Alicante has been awarded 74 in 2021, with Blue Flags flying right along the Costa Blanca this summer.
Once again, Orihuela is flying the flag for the province achieving an impressive 11 distinctions, making it the second municipality in Spain with the most awards.
Alicante itself has five, while Denia, renowned nationally for its well-kept "playas" or beaches, will show off six flags at Les Deveses and Marineta beaches amongst others.
Benidorm has been awarded three, including at its hugely popular Levante beach, while nearby Calpe's Playa L'Arenal is among a trio of shores that will proudly fly the coveted flag.
Playa del Albir in Alfaz del Pi has been recognised, while three of Javea's beaches and five of Villajoyosa's have also received distinctions.
Torrevieja now boasts six award-winning beaches and others can be found in Guardamar del Segura, Santa Pola and Elche.
The flags recognises a number of factors such as water quality, environmental management, accessibility for people with reduced mobility and health and rescue services.
