ARCHIVED - One of three Ukraine refugee reception centres in Spain will be based in Alicante
A rapid reception centre for Ukraine refugees will be located at the General University of Alicante
Spain's Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has confirmed the opening of three reception centres for Ukraine refugees; in Alicante, Barcelona and Pozuelo de Alarcón in Madrid.
Closer to home, the rapid reception centre is located at the General University of Alicante and opened today (Friday March 11), whilst the City of Light (Ciudad de la Luz) facilities are being fitted out with the necessary infrastructure and equipment to assist the Ukrainians displaced by Russia's invasion of the country.
The centre in Alicante was used during the pandemic, and has 80 beds and showers. Following their arrival at the reception facility, Ukrainian refugees will then be relocated to different locations in the province and elsewhere in Spain.
According to the sub-delegate of the Government, Araceli Poblador, "the objective is to provide a quick reception" and the displaced Ukrainians "should be here no more than 24 hours".
At the centre and also in specific police stations, the refugees forced from their beseiged towns and cities will be assisted in applying for temporary protection, a process the Interior Ministry's Asylum and Refugee Office has promised should take "a maximum of 24 hours".
Meanwhile, Alicante City Council has appealed to the public for help through the website for aid to Ukraine.
In addition to providing information on different ways to help, the website is compiling a register of accommodation provided or rented by private individuals, social organisations, local authorities and other bodies.
The network of youth hostels of the Instituto Valenciano de Juventud, IVAJ, has also been made available to the refugees, and contact is being made with hotel and employers' associations.
So far, around 1,000 displaced Ukrainians have arrived in the province of Alicante, half of them in the Vega Baja, according to the territorial director of the Presidency, Antonia Moreno.
