ARCHIVED - More than 200 irregular immigrants reach Murcia in two days
The Region of Murcia saw 123 arrivals on Monday and 85 on Tuesday, in over ten different boats
Similar to the mass arrival of pateras in the province of Almería on Monday September 27, 85 irregular immigrants arrived in the Region of Murcia on Tuesday September 28, in addition to the 123 who reached the coast on Monday.
Seven boats were intercepted on Tuesday off the coast of Cabo Tiñoso, Monte de las Cenizas and Cala Dentones, all in the municipality of Cartagena. The five boats which arrived on Monday were also spotted off the Cartagena coast.
In total 208 irregular migrants from Algeria have attempted to illegally enter Spain in the past two days, including several women and children. Currently, the immigrants have been transferred to the Escombreras dock in Cartagena to undergo PCR tests and health checks.
The Policía Nacional have increased the number of officers watching over the immigrants, due to the large number of new arrivals, who will remain in Spain until their respective expulsion orders are processed by the Spanish court systems, although in the case of underage migrants, the legal process to return them to their home country can be complicated.
This mass arrival of migrants in Murcia, along with the similar episodes in Andalucía and in Alicante, where 81 immigrants arrived in a six-hour period on Monday September 27, points toward a coordinated attack on the Spanish coast, organized by the ‘immigration mafias’.
These criminal organizations have been known to organize mass arrivals in the past, taking advantage of optimal weather conditions, and the authorities in Murcia have warned that more immigrant boats could arrive in the next few days.
