ARCHIVED - Medieval weekend at Alicante Castle attracts 6,000 visitors
Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante city staged a weekend of free activities – its first themed event of the season

Around 6,000 visitors flocked to Alicante's Santa Barbara Castle at the weekend to be transported back to medieval times – almost half of whom were British, German, Dutch and Polish.
The weekend of free exhibitions, music and activities for all the family was the historic attraction's first themed event this season and kicked off a programme of events through to October.
The castle was brought to life with medieval themed shows, games, storytelling, musicians, jugglers, circus acts, historic displays and dramatised tours.

To create the perfect atmosphere, the castle's Patio de Armas was transformed and two exhibitions allowed visitors to learn more about the medieval period; the first focusing on the torture chamber, with authentic objects and tools used by the Spanish Inquisition, and a second one on fascinating historical facts and events.
Hailing the event a huge success, Alicante City Council added: "Between Friday and Sunday, 6,000 people visited the castle, almost half of whom were foreigners. The number of visitors for the whole week reached 10,700, which is a very positive figure – the fortress is once again an attraction for the people of Alicante and for general tourism."
Visiting hours have been extended from this week and the castle is now open from 10am to 8pm until June 17 when the high season starts.
Until then, the castle will continue to host free weekend tours and dramatised visits, along with weekly concerts from May 7. Events for March include:
- March 5 and 6: Percussion Ensembles by students from Alicante's Conservatory Oscar Esplá
- March 12: 12.30pm and 1.30pm: Alvaro Magic Show
- March 20 and 27: 12.30pm: Lunático Circus Show
- March 25: Opening of 'Evil Toys' exhibition
