ARCHIVED - Infections among Alicante health workers continue to rise but at slower rate
975 healthcare staff in the Valencia region are currently on sick leave with Covid
Covid infections among healthcare workers in the Valencian region continue to increase as the sixth wave of the pandemic maintains its grip, although at a slower rate than in previous weeks.
According to the latest data from the Regional Ministry of Health, provided by the Medical Union, there are currently 975 hospital and health centre workers on sick leave due to coronavirus, compared to 848 the previous week.
This represents an increase of 15%, although significantly lower than the 70% hike from 501 to 848 seven days earlier.
Of those infected, 38 healthcare staff are in quarantine, causng major headaches in various health departments which have been forced to suspend non-urgent surgeries, close departments, or take other measures to cope with a lack of staff.
At the beginning of December last year, the College of Nurses of Valencia (CEOV) warned that the region had the highest number of healthcare workers infected with Covid in Spain.
Between May 11 and November 25, 2021, 15,495 health staff contracted the virus, with 350 positives recorded in the latter fortnight, prompting demands from the CEOV for "urgent" and greater controls to prevent the transmission of the virus in both hospitals and health centres.
Just weeks later, an Alicante court ruled a lack of PPE posed a "serious risk to the health and safety" of healthcare staff and, in the first ruling of its kind in Spain, ordered the Valencia region's Ministry of Health to compensate medical personnel for not providing them with sufficient protection against Covid during the first wave of the pandemic.
