ARCHIVED - Illegal drones plague Alicante skies despite the risk of 200,000-euro fines
Alicante police grounded a dozen illegal drones during San Juan beach fiestas
Fines in excess of 200,000 euros can be dished out in Spain for the illegal use of drones but even this doesn't appear to be much of a deterrent in Alicante where Local Police grounded a dozen "flights that endanger the public" during the San Juan fiestas last month.
Officers from the Aerial Means Unit of Alicante Local Police, in collaboration with the Rapid Intervention Group, developed a special aerial surveillance system during the San Juan bonfire and firework celebrations to detect any drone flights that were being carried out without complying with Aeronautical Legislation regulations.
"Surveillance was reinforced on the beaches during the fiestas to offer our local residents and visitors to the city greater security whilst at the same time ensuring compliance with the aeronautical regulations on drone flights and avoiding illegal drone use in places where they are prohibited for the good and safety of all," explained Councillor Security, José Ramón González.
In one incident during the early hours of June 28 whilst fireworks were being launched in the Postiguet area, officers from the Aerial Resources Unit spotted an illegal flight in one of the city centre streets.
Local Police located the 'pilot' who was ordered to land the drone and provide the relevant documentation for the flight.
It soon became clear the same person had accumulated a total of 11 infractions of aeronautical regulations, including several 'very serious offences'. A police report has been sent to the State Aviation Safety Agency and the offending pilot could be hit with a fine in excess of 200,000 euros.
