ARCHIVED - Elderly Torrevieja man allegedly murdered partner and dumped body parts in bin
A 70-year-old Finnish man has been arrested on suspicion of killing and dismembering his partner in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
Police in Torrevieja have arrested an elderly Finnish man on suspicion of murdering his partner, chopping up her body and disposing of the remains in a bin outside a supermarket in the coastal town.
The grim discovery was made by a homeless person searching for food. Detectives were immediately sent to the scene in Calle Cánovas, next to a commercial and residential area, at around 1.30am on Thursday October 28, where two legs and an arm believed to belong to the 68-year-old victim were discovered in a large wheelie bin.
Tests are currently being carried out to confirm the body parts belong to the Finnish woman.
According to police sources, the suspect was identified after being captured loitering around the waste bin on supermarket CCTV, and was arrested a few hours later.
Further body parts were discovered at the couple's home during police searches, and the 70-year-old was arrested.
The head of Torrevieja's Investigating Court ordered the immediate pre-trial detention of the expat pensioner, and ordered that work at a waste processing plant in Xixona be halted in case other remains of the corpse are found.
The government delegate for gender violence, Victoria Rosell, said on Friday October 29, that the Spanish police are collaborating with Finnish police "to confirm the identity of the victim".
"In principle, everything points to it being a new case of gender violence," she said.
Rosell's statement was made during a visit to Bilbao to promote a telephone service for women victims of gender violence.
However, she refused to use the expression 'male violence', explaining: "We are not confirming it until all the steps of the protocol have been carried out. Right now she is a possible victim (of male violence), which we hope will be confirmed within in the next few days."
