ARCHIVED - Benidorm begins road renovations at Levante beach
Extensive road and pavement alterations are being carried out in Benidorm's Calle Bilbao
Benidorm Council embarked on a week-long renovation of one of the main access roads to Levante beach on Thursday March 31, a project which is expected to take eight days, with minimal effect on traffic movement.
The renovation will focus on Calle Bilbao, creating a single road surface for both pedestrians and vehicles, without a raised curbside, and will complete the remodelling of Avenida del Mediterráneo.
Councillor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate, explained that once completed, Calle Bilbao will "have an increased pedestrian character but will maintain parking and the passage of vehicles with a reduction in the speed limit".
"The project will be completed in time for Easter and will enhance the urban scene on the beachfront, especially for those who prefer to walk who will be able to do so in a more comfortable, accessible, and sustainable manner," he added.
In addition to levelling off the pavement and road, the height of the culverts will also be increased so that they are flush with the curb, and the ramps linking the street with Paseo de Levante and Avenida del Mediterráneo will be removed.
As for traffic, the council maintains disruption will be "minimal" but Calle Bilbao will remain closed until April 8, and vehicles circulating on the Paseo de Levante will have to access Avenido del Mediterráneo via Calle Emilio Romero. Calle Juan Rodriguez will remain open to access the promenade.
