ARCHIVED - Month-long closure of Avenida del Mediterráneo in Benidorm
The main road in the Marina Baixa town will be closed to traffic whilst a techno-landmark is installed in Plaza de la Hispanidad
One of Benidorm's busiest coastal roads, Avenida del Mediterráneo, will be closed to traffic for a month from Monday December 13 whilst a techno-landmark is installed in Plaza de la Hispanidad.
The 22-metre high structure covered by a mesh of LED lights has been created in a workshop and dismantled to be reassembled in situ, and will become a "new icon of Benidorm".
The 'tecnohito' is basically a huge spiral staircase-type structure for large-scale advertising or self-promotion for the local council, which it is hoped will become another tourist attraction.
The installation will complete the total renovation of Avenida del Mediterráneo, at a cost of 13 million euros, but the components are "of such magnitude and volume" that there is no alternative other than to close the main road and divert traffic until the work is finished.
According to the council, work is expected to take approximately one month, but the area may be open to traffic at certain times.
Drivers who need to access the town centre or the Town Hall will have to do so via Calle Primavera. And to access the old town, motorists will be able to do so from the junction of Avenida Europa and Avenida del Mediterráneo. From there take Calle Bilbao, travel along Avenida de Alcoy, re-enter Calle Valencia towards Perez Llorca and continue in the usual direction.
"There will be times when the contractors will not need to occupy the entire Plaza de la Hispanidad roundabout, and so, depending on the development of the installation work, access to the Plaza will occasionally be allowed," added the council.
