ARCHIVED - Anti-fraud agency orders closure of seven Javea beach bars
Javea Town Hall has three months to close the bar-restaurants on Arenal beach in the Marina Alta, Alicante province

The Valencian Anti-Fraud Agency has ordered Javea Town Hall to close down seven bar-restaurants located on the popular Arenal beach within the next three months.
The Agency has ruled that the venues Bambula, Salt, Baltasar, Aqua, Botánico, Achill and Atalay did not have relevant licences or authorisation from the Coastal Authorities to operate on protected land.
A lengthy legal battle and investigation began in August 2018 when Javea Local Police discovered one of the businesses did not have a licence during an inspection. And last September the seven beach bar-restaurants were ordered to "cease activity and close".
They did not comply with this order, and so a bumper 39-page resolution was drawn up by the Agency and published on Monday February 7 2022.
The document states that the premises "have remained open to the public without the mandatory municipal licence", despite being told to close and that "none of the files include a mandatory report from the coastal or regional authorities".

It adds that council technicians found "deficiencies" during inspections that could "pose a risk to people's health", including the lack of a fire escape or evacuation procedure in the event of a fire.
The local authority initially claimed it "lacked the means" to close businesses and was struggling with an "accumulation" of cases.
But this argument was thrown out by the Anti-Fraud Agency and Javea Council now has three months to "finalise the sanctioning proceedings against the bars" and order them to close.
The owner of four of the seven premises began the process of applying for appropriate licenses a month ago, although there has been no update.
