American tourist found dead in Málaga was a Boston priest
Authorities are investigating further the violent death of Father Richard Gross, whose body was discovered in a city-centre flat
A tourist from the United States who was found dead in a Málaga flat last week has been identified as Father Richard Gross, an 80-year-old priest from Boston. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death, which has been classified as suspicious due to signs of violence and the theft of his belongings.
Father Gross, originally from Wrentham, Massachusetts, had been residing at Boston College High for the past year and a half. He had travelled to Málaga for a short holiday and had booked a tourist flat in the Calle Carretería area. According to reports, he was scheduled to leave the city the following day to embark on a cruise.
The priest’s body was discovered on January 21 in a flat in the centre of Málaga. Witnesses reported hearing disturbing sounds the previous evening. A neighbour described hearing screams and loud noises at around 8pm, stating that “it sounded as if he was being killed”.
However, she saw no one entering or leaving the building. Other tourists staying nearby said they noticed a heavy police presence the following day at around 4pm and saw a vehicle removing the body.
The National Police have launched an investigation, with the Homicide Group handling the case. The inquiry has been placed under court secrecy, and details remain limited. However, sources have confirmed that Gross’s body showed signs of violence, including severe head trauma. His personal belongings had also been stolen from the flat.
Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death, and no arrests have been reported so far. The investigation remains ongoing.
