ARCHIVED - Almoradi launches animal assistance project for vulnerable young people
The pioneering project in the Vega Baja area of Alicante province will offer training as therapy dog handlers
Almoradi Council has teamed up with Somos Humanymal Association to launch Avanza-Dogs Project, a pioneering initiative which aims to provide community-based assistance to young people at risk of social exclusion.
Somos Humanymal Association is dedicated to animal-assisted interventions as a resource for the ‘education, rehabilitation and inclusion of people’, and those who will take part in the project have a history of school failure, socialisation problems or lack adult guidance during this ‘complicated stage of their lives’.
The first step will be to prepare them with theoretical and practical experience as therapy dog handlers, acquiring knowledge about the training and preparation of intervention dogs.
‘Through this project, the young people will feel motivated to perform a task that will also revert to society by developing activities to help families suffering from social exclusion,’ says Almoradi Council.
They will also be involved in developing an awareness campaign on animal protection, since Somos Humanymal Association only works with rescued animals.
The aim of the project is to ‘improve the mood of young people’, reducing conflicts at home, as well as increasing their self-esteem and drive to resume studies or to find work.
‘This is a positive experience that will stimulate them to achieve new goals, and the Humanymal association will work closely with Almoradi social social services to make this project a success,’ adds the local authority.
