Alicante rolls out new virtual healthcare cards
Authorities in the Valencian Community will have 18 months to make the switch
The regional Ministry of Health in the Valencian Community has just launched a new virtual health card, which will complement the current physical one. The regulations for the new card came into force on Thursday September 19.
The virtual health card will allow health authorities to issue a digital version of the card, in addition to the physical one. The card will be valid throughout the National Health System and will allow access to health centres and services.
In essence, patients in Alicante will be able to use an app on their phones when visiting a medical centre, rather than carrying the old SIP card, as the electronic version will contain all of the necessary information, including a QR code and personal data.
The new format, similar to carrying Spanish driving licences on mobile phones, won’t replace the old plastic health cards just yet; for the next 18 months, patients will have a choice about which one they want to use.
The introduction of the virtual health card is part of the Ministry’s efforts to adapt to advances in technology and make it easier for residents to access healthcare services. The new card will provide a more convenient and efficient way for citizens to access their health information and receive medical treatment.
How will the virtual health card work?
The virtual health card will be issued by the local health authorities and will be valid for all health centres and services within the National Health System. The card will contain the same information as the physical card, including personal data and health information.
Residents will be able to access their virtual health cards through a mobile app or online platform. The card will be protected by a secure authentication system to ensure confidentiality.
Full details about the roll-out of the virtual SIP card can be consulted in the Royal Decree.
