ARCHIVED - Alicante-Kiev flights cancelled amid Russian attack on Ukraine
Around 12,000 Ukrainians live in Alicante province, the majority in Torrevieja and Alicante city itself
Russia's strongly condemned attack on Ukraine has led to the cancellation of four out of the six flights between Spain and the Eastern European country today (Thursday February 24), two of which were due to depart from Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport destined for Kiev.
If cancellations continue, it could have a significant impact on Ukrainian expats in Alicante province, of whom there are around 12,000 in 37 different municipalities, the majority in Torrevieja and Alicante city.
The other four flights were scheduled to leave from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airport in Catalonia: the scheduled arrival and departure of Bees Airline has not been affected but the arrival and departure of the Irish airline Ryanair has been cancelled.
The move follows a ban by Russia on civil aviation flying along all of Ukraine's north-eastern borders on Thursday night, confirmed by Ukrainian news agency Unian, and incredible images shared on Twitter today show completely empty airspace above the country.
And as a direct result, Lufthansa has since announced the suspension of all flights to the Ukraine on Saturday, as have Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings.
Meanwhile, Ukraine closed its international airports of Kharkiv, Dnipro and Zaporozhye on Wednesday evening until Thursday morning.
