ARCHIVED - Alicante will switch on the Christmas lights on November 18
The festive lights will be on reduced hours to save electricity in Alicante city
The eagerly anticipated switch-on of the Christmas lights in Alicante city will take place at 7pm on Friday November 18 next to the giant Christmas tree, which this year returns to Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
The 2022 budget has been increased to incorporate more than two and a half million LED lights in more city streets and neighbourhoods than ever before, although the amount of time the bulbs are lit will be reduced in a bid to cut energy consumption by 30%.
With the exception of the main festival events, such as Christmas Day, the lights will only be turned on from 7pm until 12am during the week and will remain illuminated until 4.30am at the weekends.

New to the show this year is a huge 18-metre Christmas ball that will perform three lighting shows every night, along with other impressive large-scale decorations in key points throughout the city like the Séneca, La Montañeta squares and Óscar Esplá avenue.
The date has been strategically chosen by the City Council to take advantage of the upcoming Black Friday, with hopes that the lights will create a welcoming ambience on the streets and encourage shoppers to spend in local businesses. The additional decorations requested by the Merchants’ Associations will hopefully provide a welcome boost to the economy, according to mayor Lidia López.
This year the official lighting ceremony will also be attended by the newly-crowned belleas de foc, the Queen of the San Juan festivities.
