A surge of beachgoers determined to make the most of the arrival of glorious sunshine has prompted Alicante Local Police to activate its summer security campaign a month early.

From this weekend, police surveillance will be ramped up and officers on quad bikes will patrol the coastline, police teams will be reinforced and the beach cleaning service will begin in force.

Councillor for Security, José Ramón González, explained that the city council has agreed with the Local Police to bring forward security on all beaches, but especially on playas San Juan and El Postiguet, a measure that usually begins in early June when the summer season begins and is maintained until September.

"It's an exceptional measure to ensure Alicante residents and tourists who visit us have safer beaches, and in turn officers will enforce the municipal ordinances of beaches and cleaning. The reinforcement comes into operation on Saturday May 14, with morning and afternoon shifts," he added.

In addition to normal policing duties, officers will provide public assistance and take part in rescue tasks at sea equipped with boats and surveillance further out at sea. The Cyclist Brigade will patrol the promenades and pedestrian areas.

Alicante city has the most extensive beach security in the whole of the Valencia region with more than 100 officers deployed on its five beaches: Postiguet, Albufereta/Almadraba, Saladar/Urbanova, San Juan and Tabarca.

In addition, according to the local police, it also has the greatest coverage by land, sea and air, with drones once again taking to the skies for a bird's eye view of the coastline.

"Last summer two drones were purchased, which are widely used by the Local Police both in surveillance devices on the beaches and for rescues at sea. Last week we were able to locate a surfer who had problems on the beach of Albufereta who was rescued very quickly and effectively," explained councillor González.

Alicante Local Police will be supported by Civil Protection lifeguards, firefighters, and of course lifeguards.
