ARCHIVED - Scorching temperatures with thunderstorms and hail: Spain weather May 13-15
The upcoming weekend in Spain will see a mixture of sunny skies and heavy rain
The weather this spring has been remarkably unsettled all across Spain and May is proving to be equally unpredictable, with the weekend ahead set to be marked by sometimes scorching temperatures, but also thunderstorms, rain and even hail in some areas.
The days between May 8 and 14 are traditionally known as Los Santos de los Hielos, when the last of the year’s frosts tend to hit, but Aemet has confirmed that the peninsula will escape the frosty weather.
Friday May 13
Friday will be marked by cloudy skies or high clouds in much of Spain and the Balearic Islands, although Galicia and Cantabria will be mostly overcast. Morning mists could turn into stormy showers in inland mountain areas, while weak and isolated showers can’t be ruled out in the Canary Islands.
Another calima episode is predicted in the Balearic Islands which could extend to much of the southern half of Spain on Friday, bringing yet more suspended Saharan dust.
Day-time temperatures are on the rise in much of the country, particularly in Mallorca, the Mediterranean coast, western Andalucía and Galicia; the mercury is expected to climb as high as 34ºC n the Guadalquivir valley.
Saturday May 14
Slightly cloudy skies again on Saturday but the real change will be felt in Castilla y Leon, the Pyrenees, Aragon, Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha, where showers will quickly turn into storms, accompanied by hailstones.
Another Saharan haze will turn the skies over Andalucía, Ceuta and Melilla orange once more, but temperatures will still reach a sweltering 25ºC in Cordoba, Sevilla, Lleida and Zaragoza.
A very different situation will be experienced on the Mediterranean coasts, where the thermometers will barely reach 25ºC.
Yellow weather warnings are in place for storms in La Rioja and Castilla y Leon.
Sunday May 15
The morning will start with fog in the north of Galicia and Asturias, while the haze will return to the southeast of Andalusia and Melilla. The weather will gradually worsen in the Galician community with the possibility of rain in the late afternoon.
The rest of the Peninsula will be covered by cloudy skies, which could bring stormy showers, more likely in the afternoon, in areas of the northeast, which may be stronger in the Cantabrian Mountains and in the Pyrenees.
Day-time temperatures will drop and gusts of winds will blow in from the southwest.
