ARCHIVED - Alicante police shut down one of the biggest heroin trafficking operations in recent years
21 people have been arrested during five raids in Alicante and Elda
One of the biggest and "most important" police operations in recent years against the trafficking of heroin in Alicante province has led to 21 arrests following five raids in which an axe and stones were thrown at officers.
Ten women and eleven men were detained on charges of drug trafficking, being a member of a criminal organisation, and a crime against public health, with four remanded into custody.
According to the Valencian Regional Police Headquarters, the investigation is still open and further arrests are not ruled out.
Operation 'Cuesta' began several weeks ago in the Alicante neighbourhood of Juan XXIII, where National Police were aware of several houses from which drugs were being sold.
The first three searches were carried out in this residential area, and despite "a high level of security and counter-surveillance measures" adopted by the suspects, a family clan based in Elda was identified.
"Its members were responsible for dealing with clients, carrying, selling and transporting heroin to different parts of the province," said the regional police in a statement, adding the operation is "one of the most important in recent years concerning the sale of heroin.
The investigation was extended into the La Tafalera district Elda where two more house raids were carried out.
At one of the properties, the occupants tried to get rid of the heroin by flushing it down the toilet, whilst at the second house, the suspect attempted to flee with "multiple bags of the drug".
Things also turned violent and arresting officers were forced to call in back up after "several individuals" threw stones at the police, and threatened them with an axe. There have been no reports of injuries.
During the searches, 2.6 kilos of heroin was seized, along with 210 grams of cocaine and 80 marijuana plants.
In addition, scales, other drug paraphernalia, and 1,500 euros in cash were confiscated.
