ARCHIVED - Alicante New Years Eve street party cancelled
The celebration has been cancelled as Covid infections continue to rise
With Covid cases skyrocketing in Alicante and the Community of Valencia registering a cumulative incidence rate of 563 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, the regional government has made the decision to cancel the hugely anticipated New Year’s Eve party in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento for the second consecutive year.
The popular street party was also called off in 2020 at the height of the pandemic and so last went ahead in 2019, when the festivities drew 10,000 revellers to the Town Hall.
Just last week, Alcoy council also cancelled its traditional New Year's Eve party in the Plaça d'Espanya due to the town's high Covid incidence rate and to avoid further contagions.
"The government team has suspended the night party for reasons of prudence and caution given the increase in cases of contagion of coronavirus detected in recent weeks, while calling for the responsibility of all Alicante residents and visitors regarding the compliance with health regulations to stop the spread of the virus," the City Council communicated in a statement.
