ARCHIVED - Alcoy cancels New Years Eve party due to high Covid incidence
The municipality on the Costa Blanca has an incidence rate of more than 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants
Alcoy Council has cancelled the traditional New Year's Eve party in the Plaça d'Espanya due to the town's high Covid incidence rate and to avoid further contagions.
The event typically attracts hundreds to the main square to welcome in the new year, but the local authority is concerned over the "possible risk of more contagions at a large event in which the use of masks cannot be guaranteed".
Alcoy, like many municipalities in the Valencia region, has a 14-day cumulative incidence rate of more than 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
"Fortunately, despite this incidence rate, the hospital pressure is not high, thanks largely to the fact that most of the population is vaccinated. However we must continue to take the necessary health safety measures," said the Town Hall in a statement.
Current regulations in the Valencia region mean it is compulsory to present a Covid passport to attend events, celebrations and music festivals with more than 500 attendees, both indoors and in open spaces.
"The New Year's Eve party is an outdoor celebration where there is a very high concentration of people, more than 500 people participate and unlike other events, it is not possible to guarantee the use of the mask at all times, since it is precisely at this event that grapes are eaten and people usually drink in the street, something that is also prohibited and can increase the risk of possible transmission of Covid," added Alcoy Council.
As the upward trajectory continues in the region, president of the Valencia region, Ximo Puig, announced on Wednesday December 15 that experts are currently studying the possibility of expanding the use of the Covid passport to different types of establishments.
He insisted that we "must live with the pandemic" and called for responsibility over the Christmas period.
