ARCHIVED - Alicante firefighters make a record number of mountain rescues in one day
Alcoy, Alcali and Sierra de Orihuela in the province of Alicante were all the scene of mountain rescues.
Firefighters from the Provincial Consortium of Alicante made a record number of rescues in a single day in Alcoy, Alcali and Sierra de Orihuela on Sunday, May 9 - hours after the end of State of Alarm in Spain.
Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured in any of the incidents, which saw the rescue helicopter involved in six mountain rescues, lifting hikers to safety, and firefighters tackle a forest blaze.
The first of the rescues took place around 1pm in Alcoy, at a spot 25 minutes walk from the Castell de Barxell, following a report of a 61-year-old woman who had suffered a fractured foot.

However, when the rescue helicopter arrived at the scene, they discovered a second hiker who also needed medical attention for a sprain.
Around 10 minutes later, the Provincial Consortium of Alicante was forced to dispatch a helicopter to the top of the Sierra de Orihuela and after medics first treated the female hiker for a possible sprain, she was transferred to a nearby hospital in Vega Baja.
In a busy afternoon, another woman who had fallen while walking along a reservoir route at the El Pantano de Tibi was airlifted to hospital, and rescuers later attended to second female hiker, aged 64, who suffered a drop in blood pressure while walking in the Sierra Gelada, between Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi.
She was transferred to nearby San Vicente natural park and taken to hospital.
In yet another incident, three people lost their bearings in Aigües de Busot and became lost. A rescue team guided the group back to the official track, though it wasn't necessary to mobilise the helicopter.
Meanwhile, shortly before 3pm, nine air units - helicopters and aeroplanes - and around 20 teams on the ground tackled an out-of-control forest fire in Alcali at the side of the CV-740, La Llosa de Camacho.
Witnesses in Marina Alta - more than 10km away - reported seeing a huge column of black smoke, as firefighters from Denia and Benissa spent around four hours bringing the flames under control.
