ARCHIVED - Alicante deploys 300 police officers on first weekend without curfew
Officers will patrol the streets and beaches to ensure compliance with health measures in the Alicante comarca on the Costa Blanca.
More than 300 police officers will be deployed in Alicante this weekend - the first weekend since the nightly curfew was lifted across the Valencia region.
As well as ensuring compliance with anti-Covid health measures, such as mask wearing and social distancing, hundreds of police officers will be tasked with preventing overcrowding and street parties in areas where large groups of young people normally gather.
Despite the relaxation of restrictions to curb the spread of Covid, "the guard will not be lowered" in Alicante, and the Local Police "will continue working to avoid a setback in the progress made in the face of the pandemic".
To prevent large groups of people drinking in the street - known as botellones in Spain - 24-hour patrols will be made of popular hotspots, including Alicante castle, Cabo de las Huertas, Playa de San Juan, as well as in the old town and parks and squares.
Meanwhile, the five beaches of Alicante will be policed by officers on quads, on boats at sea and by air with the support of a drone.
And the Local Police are warning that "breathalyzer controls" will be carried out, alcohol will be confiscated and offenders will be fined.
Police in Alicante shut down an illegal party at a villa in Mutxamel in the province during the early hours of Sunday morning, June 6, where they discovered around 100 people - none of them social distancing or wearing masks.
