ARCHIVED - Alicante buses return to full capacity from October 21
Whilst there will be no compulsory vacant seats, facemasks must still be worn to board Alicante city buses
Sixteen months after capacity restrictions were enforced on urban buses in Alicante to combat the spread of Covid, the measures are being lifted from Thursday October 21, and buses will return to full capacity.
Despite the anti-Covid measures, 1,190,238 passengers travelled on the public transport network operated by Masatusa in September, down just 17% on the 1,442,568 users in the same month in 2019.
"The recovery is proving satisfactory because in January this year we were at 51% of passenger occupancy compared to pre-pandemic levels, and nine months later we seem to be entering the final phase with the recovery of 83% of passenger flow," explained councillor for transport, Manuel Villar.
"With the government lifting of restrictions on occupancy and the forthcoming introduction of cash payment, we hope to complete the full recovery of the volume of users in urban public transport by bus compared to before the confinement in March 2020. If we maintain the current projection, we will exceed 11,400,000 passengers by the end of the year," he added.
