Alicante breaks cruise passenger records with 212,500 visitors this summer
The Costa Blanca is being promoted as a top tourism destination at the Seatrade Cruise Med fair in Malaga
Having just reported the highest growth rate among the top 5 airports in Spain in August, Alicante is also breaking records when it comes to cruise passengers. Before the summer ends, the Costa Blanca port will have welcomed 94 luxury liners carrying a whopping 212,500 holidaymakers, the largest number ever.
Not content with these impressive figures, Alicante is currently being promoted as a top destination at the Seatrade Cruise Med fair, which is taking place in Málaga at the moment.
This event will bring together more than 2,000 cruise industry professionals from 80 countries, with nearly 200 stands displaying the latest trends and innovations in this tourism niche.
As the director of the Provincial Tourism Board in Alicante, José Mancebo, has explained, "The purpose of our attendance at the event is to attract new shipping companies to our port and diversify the offer of excursions to cruise passengers with a portfolio of proposals throughout the province, highlighting our tourist municipalities and our differentiated and quality offer."
The Costa Blanca and Alicante city are becoming increasingly popular with cruise liners. In 2022, some 60 ships docked in the port, a figure which jumped up to 84 in 2023. This year, Alicante is expected to set a new record with 10 additional ships and an 8% increase in passengers.
According to Mr Mancebo, this year-on-year growth proves that the city has become "an attractive base port for shipping companies, generating a significant economic impact, with figures reaching 40 million euros, and possibly reaching 70 million if indirect and induced impacts are included".
