Alicante Baby Jesus kidnappers arrested
The thieves pilfered the Sant Vicent del Raspeig Nativity and demanded 2,000 euros in ransom for the statue
Police in the Alicante town of Sant Vincent del Raspeig have made good on their promise for a “prompt resolution” to the theft of the Baby Jesus statue from the municipal Nativity Scene and arrested the perpetrators just hours after they posted a video on social media demanding a ransom for the safe return of the statue.
The two young men, self-styled as the ‘Kidnappers of Sant Vicent’, were picked up on Monday December 18 and spent the night behind bars in Alicante. It’s not yet clear what charges they will face, although the local authorities have assured that the pair will face stern “consequences” for their blatant “hooliganism”.
The despicable duo filmed the moment they robbed the Baby Jesus from his cradle, claiming that they had stolen the life-sized figurine because the Local Police didn’t look after him well enough. They then demanded a 2,000-euro payout and threatened they would destroy the statue if the authorities didn’t comply.
“Tonight he sleeps with us,” one of the thieves ominously concluded in the video.
Their coup proved to be short-lived, however, as the hooded perpetrators were quickly apprehended.
The mayor of the municipality, José Rafael Pascual Llopis, confirmed that “fortunately, thanks to the work of our Local Police, we have managed to arrest the two alleged perpetrators of the theft of the baby Jesus and the dissemination on social networks of the video where they requested a ransom”.
Needless to say, the authorities didn’t hand over any money and Baby Jesus has been safely returned to his proper place in the Sant Vicent del Raspeig Nativity Scene.
