Alicante Airport surpassed 1 million passengers in February for the first time ever
Around a third of all passengers through the Costa Blanca airport last month were British
The Costa Blanca continues to make a name for itself as one of the most popular tourist destinations in southern Spain. The Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has broken yet another record, with a staggering 1,002,310 registered passengers last month, surpassing the one million mark for the first February ever.
This figure represents a substantial 26.8% increase compared to the same month in 2023. It’s worth mentioning that 2024 is a leap year, with February having 29 days instead of the usual 28, which may have contributed slightly to the increased passenger numbers, but the data is still very impressive.
The nearby Region of Murcia International Airport also experienced a jump up in traffic, with its 27,561 passengers in February representing an increase of 32.6% on last year.
International passengers continued to drive the growth in traffic, making up 849,443 of the total number of travellers. This marks a remarkable 28.4% increase compared to the same period last year. National traffic also saw a significant rise, with 152,042 passengers, an 18.4% jump from last year.
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that, when it comes to nationalities, the United Kingdom takes the lead as usual, contributing 335,411 passengers to the airport's overall February traffic – that’s almost a third. The Netherlands follows closely behind, with 76,245 passengers, while Poland, Belgium and Germany round out the top five, with 60,125, 58,032, and 54,646 passengers, respectively.
Overall, Alicante Airport has enjoyed a strong start to the year, handling a total of 1,960,398 passengers between January and February. This impressive figure represents a 23.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Operations wise, the airport handled a total of 12,839 flights during the first two months of the year, a 19.9% increase from the same months last year.
