Alicante Airport strikes extended to last all of August
Airlines have warned passengers to expect major delays at the Costa Blanca airport
Passengers travelling through Alicante Airport face a month of disruption as strikes are extended throughout August, causing potential chaos for travellers during the busy summer season.
Security personnel at Alicante-Elche airport are continuing their partial strikes, which are expected to cause significant delays for passengers, particularly those flying out from Spain and requiring baggage control.
The strikes, organised by several unions, including CSIF, CC.OO, USO and UGT, are strategically planned to coincide with the airport's busiest days. More than 290 security workers are taking part in the protests, demanding improved working conditions and a better work-life balance.
The unions are specifically calling for a solution to the “high incidence of psychosocial risks” associated with early morning shifts starting at 3.30am.
The strikes commenced in July and have now been extended into August due to a lack of agreement with the airport security service provider.
The protesting workers plan to carry out partial strikes on August 1, 2, 3, 4, 15, 16, 17, 18, 30 and 31, with specific timings of 8.30am to 9.30am and again from 6pm to 7pm.
Airlines are already warning passengers to arrive well in advance to account for potential delays and crowding. Jet2.com, for example, is advising its customers to allow for extra time to complete all necessary formalities before boarding their flights.
Despite the strikes, sources from Aena, the airport operator, have indicated that there have been no significant incidents thus far, and the airport continues to operate normally. However, with the busy August travel period ahead, travellers are urged to stay updated and prepare for potential disruptions to their journeys.
