Aguilas demands roads be mended and the port fixed up
The mayor has also asked President Fernando López Miras to provide funding for extra staff for the town’s mental health service
The Mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, held a meeting with the regional President, Fernando López Miras, today to discuss a number of issues affecting the town, including education and mental health.
They also discussed topics close to the hearts of people in Águilas, such as the renovation work on the Fishing Port and the urgent road maintenance that is needed at Calabardina.
But it was mental health that took centre stage as the Mayor conveyed to the head of the Regional Executive the “worrying” situation of the Mental Health Service in the Águilas: “The service is currently without psychiatrists, which forces Águilas patients to go to the neighbouring municipality of Lorca, thus increasing the waiting lists and forcing these patients to change doctors at each visit, with the problems that this entails.”
Regarding Education, Moreno insisted to the Murcian president on the need to “expand the level of professional formation available in Águilas, which is located more than thirty kilometres from Lorca.”
In this sense, Mayor Moreno reiterated the convenience of establishing an Integrated Professional Training Centre for Hospitality and Restoration in Águilas, in coordination with the Águilas Town Council and with the help of municipal facilities. The idea is that, with such a centre available to them, adults could earn certificates in “Cooking and Gastronomy” and “Catering Services”. This would be facilitated by the fact that in the new Centre for Social Dynamisation that is almost completed, the municipality will have a fully equipped kitchen and an attached dining room that will meet all the necessary requirements to host these degrees.
In terms of the port, Moreno asked the regional president for a solution for a central area of the town, the state of which means it is due to “comprehensive remodelling”.
She said, “It is the exclusive responsibility of the Regional Government to be able to act in this area and it is precisely for this reason that from the Town Council we can only ask them to respond to these requests, just as they did at the time in municipalities like Mazarrón where an underground parking lot was built and, above it, a leisure area, always taking into account the agents that could be affected, such as fairground vendors and hoteliers.”
Finally, with regard to road maintenance, the Mayor thanked the President for the money he had recently invested in road care in Águilas but insisted, once again, on the need to urgently repair the Águilas-Calabardina highway (RM-D15), as it passes through said district because the road surface is in very bad condition.
