Agreement reached to push ahead with Cabo de Palos regeneration project
Cartagena council, residents and local businesses have all agreed on a plan to develop the historic harbour
A meeting was held last week in Cabo de Palos, where architects responsible for the project to completely transform the harbour mouth overlooking Cabo de Palos presented their plan to various neighbourhood and business associations. Attendees included representatives from the Cabo de Palos Neighbourhood Association, the Business Association of Cabo de Palos and La Manga, and the PROCABO Association.
Plans to create a unique tourist attraction and recreation area in Cabo de Palos were almost derailed in January following several objections from environmental groups, who were worried that the development would cause irreparable damage to the 'Muro de Sal' ('Salt Wall').
However, it seems an agreement has now been reached and in a joint statement issued after the meeting, the three local and business groups expressed their satisfaction with the project, confirming that it had been approved by all parties.
During the meeting, the architects presented improvements they had made to the project following initial public presentations, including enhancements to landscaping, urban furniture and the inclusion of elements that tell the story of the location.
Issues related to design, technical aspects, and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage were also discussed, given the sensitive and significant nature of the enclave at the mouth of the port of Cabo de Palos.
While the project was generally well received, certain concerns were raised, including the proposed removal of a fuel supply station, the need for a technical and environmental review of the lighting project and the rejection of a large sign with the name 'Cabo de Palos'.
Additionally, participants again emphasised the historical significance of the Salt Wall and requested that the project recognise and respect this aspect of the location's history.
