ARCHIVED - Abandoned litter of puppies saved from certain death in Elche
Three newborn puppies were put in a cardboard box and dumped near a bin in the Baix Vinalopo town, Alicante province
Three adorable puppies dumped in a cardboard box and left near a bin in Elche have been spared a certain death and given a second chance thanks to a combined community and police effort.
The Local Police have publicly denounced the heartless and "unacceptable" behaviour on social media, whilst warning they will find whoever is responsible.
"Some people, even today, are totally insensitive to animals, despite the fact that in recent years awareness has increased enormously in our society regarding the care and protection of all living beings," said Elche police.
The tiny pups were abandoned to their fate near a large waste container in the Elche district of Daimés, and were only spared a horrific death had they been collected by a compactor waste collection lorry when a local resident heard their whimpering.
Unable to find them amongst the rubbish, they called the Local Police and officers joined the search until they were finally discovered inside a box with cigarette butts.
"This is despicable behaviour, abandoning a group of puppies inside a cardboard box. If somebody is unable to take care of animals, there are alternatives. These are defenceless living beings," added the police.
The three pups were initially taken to Elche's municipal animal shelter, but are now in the care of Nodrizas Alicante, a dog rescue and adoption association, which has also hit out at whoever is responsible for their abandonment and addressed them personally.
"Three little ones rescued in a box full of rubbish and cigarette butts? You really had time to smoke to celebrate your actions? You let your dog give birth and then you threw her puppies away...."
The Local Police have launched an investigation to find the person responsible, and have stressed: "There are always alternatives before doing something like this".
