A quarter of all British TIE holders live in Alicante
A huge number of UK citizens resident in Spain still haven’t switched to a TIE card
It’s estimated that around 300,000 British citizens now call Spain their permanent home and a staggering number choose the whitewashed beaches and cosmopolitan cities of Alicante province to put down roots.
According to a recent report from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, a whopping 25% of all British TIE card holders in Spain are registered as living in Alicante, and a third of the total are over 65 years of age.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Orihuela Costa is by far the most popular destination for retirees and younger expats making the move from the UK, and of the area’s almost 80,000 full-time residents, no fewer than 10,000 are British – that’s one out of every eight residents.
Following Brexit, the Spanish government asked all British citizens to exchange their green residency certificate for a new TIE residency card, although the old cert remains valid. However, the report suggests that as many as 211,000 Britons still haven’t made the switch to the TIE card.
This situation is likely to change in the future, however, as Spanish authorities do intend to phase out the green certificates in favour of digital cards.
Once the government in Spain does decide to make the switch to machine-readable cards, it is likely that UK citizens will not be allowed to update their certificates but will instead have to apply for a TIE.
