70-year-old man drowns at popular beach in Orihuela Costa
The victim was pulled unconscious from the water at Playa Flamenca in the Vega Baja region of Alicante province
A 70-year-old man has died at Flamenco beach in Orihuela Costa after being pulled from the sea unconscious by other bathers.
The tragedy occurred around 4pm on Thursday May 11. Medics tried to revive the pensioner using advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other stabilisation techniques. However, the victim was unresponsive and died at the scene.
The beach fatality comes just a week after a 76-year-old woman drowned at Arenal beach in the Alicante town of Javea.
Flamenca is renowned for its strong currents, and one theory is the most recent victim was pulled underwater by a strong undercurrent.
The coastal stretch has is one of 11 beaches in Orihuela recently accredited with a coveted Blue Flag by the European Foundation for Environmental Education for cleanliness and good management.
However, locals have questioned the decision to award the flag at Playa Flamenco, claiming the beach lacks basic services such as toilets, lifeguards and beach bars.
