ARCHIVED - 68-year-old woman drowns at La Mata beach in Torrevieja
This is the second drowning on Torrevieja's coastline in the Vega Baja region of Alicante province in a month

A 68-year-old woman has died en route to hospital after being pulled unconscious from the sea at La Mata beach in Torrevieja.
Lifeguards and paramedics managed to stabilise the woman, but she passed away on arrival at Torrevieja Hospital.
Sources at the Emergency Coordination Centre (CICU) confirmed that "she was pulled out of the water unconscious on Thursday morning" and a SAMU unit and an SVB ambulance were sent to the scene.
"Members of the lifeguard service contracted by the Torrevieja Town Hall performed cardiac massage on the bather and a SAMU medical team continued with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other recovery techniques to stablise the woman but she died on arrival at the University Hospital of Torrevieja," added CICU.
It's not clear how the woman got into difficulty as the "sea state was good" and the green flag was flying. A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of the woman's death.
Last month, on May 20, a man drowned at Torrevieja's Cura beach.
And on Wednesday June 15, a seven-year-old schoolboy tragically drowned after getting his hand stuck in a suction drain at the bottom of a swimming pool at Bulevar Cantalar Residence urbanisation in Cabo de las Hurtas in Alicante.
