ARCHIVED - 35-year-old arrested for looting dozens of graves in two Alicante towns
The alleged grave-robber stole up to 70 ornamental pieces from resting sites at cemeteries in Elda and Petrer
Police in Alicante have arrested a 35-year-old Romanian man for allegedly looting graves at cemeteries in Petrer and Elda, climbing the walls at night and ransacking the resting sites.
In a joint statement, the National Police and Guardia Civil confirmed the suspect was detained on April 6 in connection with the theft of at least 70 ornamental pieces during nighttime raids, in particular brass items, many of which have since been recovered at various junkyards.
"An investigation began on March 25 following complaints from several families and there were a number of common denominators; the thefts took place at night when the cemeteries were closed and similar items were taken on each occasion."
The value of the items stolen and the damage caused during the 'immoral" crime spree is estimated to be around 20,000 euros, and that's "in addition to the great deal of alarm which the thefts generated amongst the relatives of the deceased whose graves were targeted", added the police.
The 35-year-old, who has a record for similar offences, appeared before the Court of Instruction in Elda where he was provisionally released on charges of robbery with force pending a further court appearance.
