Work begins to repair Campoamor beach road, but will it last?
Orihuela City Council plans to put a wooden walkway beside La Glea beach
Five years after a powerful DANA storm ripped up the roadway beside Campoamor’s La Glea beach on the Orihuela Costa, which has just been awarded a prestigious Blue Flag, diggers have appeared along the shoreline to rip up the asphalt and replace it with another wooded walkway.
But as residents of the area can attest, this has been tried before and heavy rains have simply washed the wooden structures away, leaving the path impassable for both vehicles and pedestrians.
At the moment, the road is completely closed off to traffic, meaning cars have to detour up and around the residential streets, behind the bridge that crosses over the river.
But it’s precisely this river that causes some of the problems, as local groups have been tirelessly arguing, and unless the drainage issues are tackled once and for all, there’s nothing preventing the overflow washing down onto the beach if there’s a storm.
Moments after the work began to tear up the existing road, officers from the Local Police force halted the job due to a longstanding argument between the City Council, who wants the road open to traffic as soon as possible, and Costas, who claim the new structure will hinder the free flow of the Nacimiento River.
In any case, the works resumed on Wednesday May 8 so it looks like the plans for a new wooden walkway are going ahead. It’s unclear how long the job will take, or how long beachgoers will have to endure the noise and disruption.
In the meantime, the Neighbourhood Association of Cabo Roig and Lomas (AVCRL) has demanded answers from the Orihuela City Council about whether they will be responsible for its maintenance and almost inevitable repairs in the future.
