ARCHIVED - Winter flights to Spain almost at pre pandemic levels
The UK is back on top with 3.5 million Brits expected to travel to Spain this winter
With coronavirus restrictions lifted and life pretty much back to normal in most regions, Spain is once again topping the list of desirable places to travel to, and international tourism is experiencing an encouraging rebound. Recent data published by Turespana which is governed by the Ministry of Tourism predicts an even bigger boost over the winter period, with 19.1 million flights expected to arrive in Spanish airports between November 2021 and January next year. This is just 8.1% fewer international travellers than pre-pandemic 2019 and represents a staggering 374.2% increase on the same period last year.
It’s not all good news as many of the main air carriers will reduce their flight paths over the winter to lower levels than in 2019 due mainly to a resurgence of Covid cases in countries such as Russia, the United States and China. However, flights to Poland, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium are all expected to increase substantially.
While an increase in tourists arriving in Spain is most welcome news for the economy, it is certainly less positive for the environment, and with world leaders congratulating themselves on their dedication to climate change at the recent summit in Glasgow, more flights simply means more harmful emissions.
Experts around the globe have already proven that the aviation industry contributes an enormous amount of greenhouse gas to the environment, and the president of the government, Pedro Sanchez, himself came under fire this week for blatantly disregarding the climate crisis by using private aircraft for ridiculously short journeys.
With Covid cases once again surging throughout Europe, November flights are expected to drop by around 24% overall as the uncertainty continues. The picture is slightly better in December, with a predicted drop of just 3.6% of international passengers while things will start to pick up again in January with an increase of 3.9%.
By country, the United Kingdom will once again top the list with a total of 3.5 million passengers travelling to Spain throughout the winter, followed by Germany with 2.6 million and Italy with 1.9 million people.
