Why you should never sleep with the fan on all night
Spanish nights might be stifling, but there are several serious health implications from sleeping with a fan
Summer temperatures in Spain can be rather hard to take at times and most of us opt for a refreshing dip in the sea or the pool to cool off during the day. But when the nights turn tropical too, the punishing heat makes it difficult for even the deepest of sleepers to nod off.
As well as looking after ourselves during the summer by staying hydrated, avoiding the midday sun and wearing light, loose clothing it’s also important to prepare out home for the heat. It’s common practice to switch on the air con or fan a couple of hours before bedtime to cool the room, but did you know that it can be very harmful to leave these devices switched on all night?
Why you shouldn’t sleep with the fan on
Spanish nurse Jorge Ángel has hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok and has become famous for his sound advice – he recently explained why it’s a really bad idea to wear underpants under swimming costumes.
Jorge is back with his latest pearl of wisdom and has strongly advised against leaving fans on all night.
“The continuous movement of the air causes mites and dust to move more,” he said, greatly increasing the risk of allergy problems. If the air is hitting your face directly, he went on, the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth can dry out much more, which will cause you to produce more mucus that can lead to congestion and headaches.
And for those with bad backs, an incessantly blowing fan can actually increase muscle pain and stiffness.
To be on the safe side, if you simply can’t sleep without the fan it’s best to point it slightly away from you or, better yet, set it to rotate.
