When is the next festivo coming up in Spain?
Several regions of Spain will enjoy a four-day weekend next month

For most of us, the Easter holidays are already a distant memory. In a few regions, including the Valencian Community and Catalonia, Easter Monday, April 21, is also a festivo, so those lucky folk get to enjoy an extra day off. But for the rest of us, it’s back to reality until the next bank holiday in Spain. The good news is that we don’t have all that long to wait.
The next national holiday is a mere two weeks away on Thursday May 1, celebrating Labour Day.
Labour Day, also known as Mayday or International Workers’ Day, is a global celebration dedicated to workers and their rights. In Spain, it's marked as a ‘festivo’ - a public bank holiday - on May 1, meaning most shops, businesses and schools are closed for the day.
But there’s even better news, since several regions, including Andalucía and Alicante, have decided to elect Friday May 2 as a non-working day as well, meaning that schools and businesses will be closed for a wonderful four-day May bank holiday weekend.
In Madrid, May 2 is always a public holiday to commemorate the Second of May Uprising in 1808.
It’s up to each individual supermarket or shop to decide whether or not to open on May 1, so the best bet is to give your local store a quick call or pop in and ask about their bank holiday hours.
While the US observes Labour Day in September, many other countries, including Spain, honour workers in May. The date has historic roots, commemorating major labour milestones like the 1886 general strike in the US and the founding of the Second International by the Marxist International Socialist Congress in 1889.
It’s a day to reflect on the struggles and achievements of workers around the world.
