What happens if I drive with an expired licence in Spain?
Failing to renew your licence in Spain can lead to a fine and nasty insurance costs in the event of an accident

Since a driving licence in Spain is valid for 10 years, up until you reach the age of 65 anyway, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that some people may simply forget that this important document is up for renewal. And although drivers are required by law to carry their licence on them at all times, how often do people really look closely at them?
It may be time to dig yours out of the glove compartment, as the traffic authorities have reminded that driving with an expired licence will guarantee a fine of 200 euros. Moreover, it’s actually a crime that can lead to up to 24 months behind bars, or the equivalent in community service.
Not having your licence in the car with you when you climb behind the wheel will also land you in hot water to the tune of 80 euros. Worse still is not having the appropriate licence for the vehicle you’re driving, like a motorbike, for example, which requires a different kind of permit; this is considered a serious infraction and will cost you 500 euros in fines, as well as a deduction of 4 points from your driving licence.
Finally, forgetting to renew your licence or carrying the wrong type can nullify your insurance if you’re in an accident. Even if you have chosen fully comprehensive insurance, the company can refuse to cover the cost of repairs to your car if they decide the mishap was your fault. In this unfortunate event drivers can usually claim the compensation due to the other motorist, but the company may claim the indemnified amount from you, arguing that an accident has occurred with an invalid permit.
Renewing your driving licence in Spain
If you don’t intend to drive, there’s no obligation to renew your licence, but if you plan on getting behind the wheel, you’ll have to renew it by undergoing a health test and submitting an application to the DGT.
The licence renewal itself costs just 24.58 euros for the usual B permit, although the health test is another 40-60 euros. Your new licence will arrive at your address within 90 days, but the traffic authorities will give you a provisional licence in the meantime so you can keep driving.
